Do the Dems have Principles Anymore? Ever?

This is an amazing thread over at LSF - still discussing some of the implications of the dKos-run-the-feminists-off implosion of this past week. (And, to be clear, it's not about the ad, the ad was just the latest catalyst.) Anyway, I'm a huge fan of marisacat's, which is why I started reading the thread. I was also struck by this wondeful articulation from Madman in the Marketplace:
The problem with Dems is that they are ALL tactics, no strategy. None. You cant fight a campaign that way. You cant motivate a social movement that way. Or, in parlance Pete might like morethe Dems are all procedure manuals, no business plan.

Not only are they all tactics, but those tactics are based on bad intelligence (Im gonna stick w/ the military analogy, b/c Im too lazy to come up w/ another, and I HATE sports analogies). The Dem leaders make those strategies based on people they talk to: lobbyists, think tankers and the media. After the K Street Project and other efforts, those people are all either Republican or mercenaries.

Arguing for privacy rights is a tactic. It is a tactic that could be very effective, and could spill over into many areas, not just womens health. The associated strategy would be something like: The Democratic is a peoples party, dedicated to protecting the individual LIBERTY of ALL Americans.

Arguing for universal health care is a tactic. The associated strategy would be something like: The Democratic Party is a human rights party, dedicated to protecting the LIVES of ALL Americans.

Arguing for full funding of public education is a tactic. The associated strategy would be something like: The Democratic Pary is the progressive and rational party, dedicated to enabling the a fair opportunity to pursue the Fruits of Happiness for ALL Americans.

Strategy is the explication of the goals, of the destination a group/army/party/movement aims to reach. Tactics is how you get there.
